What is it about this place? I've never heard of so many horrible cases of animal abuse anywhere else I've lived.

Oh God, thank you for prefacing it. It's awful, I can't even read about things like this because it effects me so. But I completely agree how incredibly horribly a person must be to abuse a helpless animal who cannot defend themselves.

I may sound like a complete geek right now but I'm impressed that you were moved enough to post about it.

Sick people everywhere, it seems. Unfortunately, animals are considered property so they have very little protection from cruelty. Personally, I think animal cruelty should be a felony charge and punished accordingly.

I agree. I've been appalled by the number of stories about animal abuse and cruelty here. The laws definitely need to be rewritten to address this issue.

could it be that the there is better reporting of animal cruelty here? or better enforcement of the laws?

Tampa ranked 20th of all states in the 2011 ALDF Animal Protection Laws ranking so more arrests would account for more reporting of incidents.

the OP clearly hates all things Florida/Tampa - so it doesn't surprise me that he/she would label a thread There are a lot of sick people here

I've lived in or spent a lot of time in #'s 1, 8, 16 and 17 on that list and don't remember hearing about all the abuse I've heard about here.

A couple incidents that stand out are the mother and her very young son killing kittens in a park or the couple who tortured a cat and then tossed it in the bay inside it's crate. I realize this stuff happens everywhere, but from the "reporting" it seems a lot worse here.
