A word of advice too - and I speak from the heart and from experience - no matter how grave a situation might be, being a caregiver in any capacity can take its toll. It took me a long, LONG time to believe that it's not wrong to want or need a mental break occasionally. So do not forget about yourself. You need to rejuvenate for both your loved ones as well as yourself; otherwise, you will find yourself suffering in sneakly little ways.

My best to you and your family

Thank you so much everyone.

It was a very tough and emotional few days. We are back in Florida know, but my niece and father are having surgery this week in MA. Not sure when my Dad's surgery will be, so they wanted me to just come back home. It was great to be able to spend time with them and express our love to them. I am hopeful things will be better toward the end of the week. We at least have a much better picture as to what my Dad's issue is and it should now be able to be corrected. He is just feeling bad until they can get him in the surgery scheduled. On intravenous feeding only.

We gave my Mom an iPad, so we can now connect with them via FaceTime and actually see his progress as it happens. This should help a lot.

While we love living here in Florida and have managed the family distance well (we have family here and up in MA), it is times like this that test the soul. Of all the pros and cons to moving anywhere, I feel this is the most difficult thing to handle in times like these. This is something for people to consider when moving. We would still opt to be here, but we are able to travel as needed. It must be really tough for people who cannot fly back to their former home as needed.
