I am thinking of relocating in west central Florida - Brooksville, Spring Hill area. I have a friend there that loves it. He claims it is a little cooler there than in other parts of Florida. He also says there is not a big insect problem there as opposed to other areas. I am looking to buy a house in the $300,000.00 range. I am single in mid 50s and like to ride motorcycles. I am moving because of the LA traffic and because I want more land and some seclusion. Any info would be appreciated.

There are bugs everywhere in FL. It does get a little cooler in Brooksville during the winter by a few degrees.

You might want to check out city-data for other info.

As the above poster mentioned, there are bugs all over Florida. It depends if you are near woods, rivers, etc. how many mosquitoes or other bugs you will get.

We lived in the Dade City/Brooksville area for 10 years. Beautiful, hilly country, and Brooksville is always SEVERAL DEGREES cooler than surrounding areas - it's a microclimate. Dade City is cooler, also. Many motorcycle riders in the area,so you will love that. We live in Lakeland, now, about 30 miles SE, and this is motorcycle capital of Florida. You can probably find something real nice in your price range, many good deals all over right now.

It's tropical-- there are bugs. There are also, mercifully, exterminators.

If you're a bike guy you have to go to Daytona (about 2.5 hours away) for Bike Week at least once. It's...surreal, especially the cole slaw wrestling.

Default Bugs and Hot weather

Hope I can help....

I live in Clearwater near the coast in Pinellas county but my sister lives in Brooksville. She recently moved from Morgan Hill, Ca and seems to enjoy it.

As a biker you will experience "Love Bug" infestations two times a year. They are everywhere on the highways and make it very hard to keep a car or bike clean. Brooksville is also a VERY rural area which means bugs are plentifully.

Florida does not have cool weather! It is unbearable during the summer in any area. You will get cooler weather inland but central Florida is very different from the coast. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Daytona Beach is biker central all year... It is however a very boring beach town normally.

This might be a bit off the main topic but is a comment about bugs in Florida. I lived there for six years, recently moving to Washington state for employment purposes. I never thought the bugs were that bad in Florida, but I see a lot of posts about them. Sitting here in all this gloom and rain, fog and blah, I'd give anything to be around those bugs in Florida again!

Default I'm a Spring Hill booster

I'm in my 50s too and have been in Spring Hill for three years. I'm glad I came here. I have never lived in California but I have been a very frequent visitor for many years. Originally I wanted to ultimately retire in California and wound up in Florida because of the enormous cost difference. Your 300 grand will buy a pretty nice house here. In California it won't, as you already know. As much as I love California I have become a real Florida fan.

I rode year round in Seattle for five years (commuting), and yes you can go weeks and weeks riding in the dark, cold, rain. Heated grips and an electric vest are wise investments.

I'm thinking of moving to the Tampa/St. Pete area - how is riding as a commuter there?

My drive was never a problem in Tampa, it only took me 20 minutes to get to work and back. The transportation system is not very good in Tampa, and compared to Seattle, it is almost non-existent.
