The Vinoy is actually in zip code 33701. 33703 is Shore Acres.

There are a number of reasonably-priced mid-tier hotels in and around downtown. Are you looking for a hotel or a weekly condo rental?

chi_tino, is that area considered Old Northeast?

Do you come across rentals in that area? I didn't realize you were a real estate agent.

Yes, I am a licensed real estate agent. I represent friends and family on real estate deals as a hobby, and rebate them most of the commissions (I give a few bucks to my broker to handle some of the paperwork). Every dollar I can take out of a realtor's pocket is a dollar of good karma.

Here's your zip code map:

That is a great link chi_tino, thank you!

So from that map, it would appear I'm looking at the northern part of zips 33701 and 33705 with 33704 thrown in. Does your family rent anything on the lower end (price wise) in those areas?

I personally don't rent anything out, but I could send you different links, such as vrbo for condo rentals or tell you about some priceline bidding strategies for St Pete.

A few ideas:

I've recommended Priceline in the past ( //www.city-data.com/forum/24800833-post6.html ), but when researching it right now it appears as though Priceline has changed some star-levels that make it almost worthless for bidding in St Pete.

The problem is that they have a hotel in the wrong zone, and you might accidentally get it. The St Petersburg Marriott Clearwater (actually in Clearwater) is considered the "St Petersburg zone", rather than the "Clearwater-North St Pete zone", where it obviously is. They've now moved it to a 3.5* ( TAMPA/ST. PETERSBURG/CLEARWATER HOTEL LIST in Florida - Tampa/Clearwater/St. Petersburg Forum ), so now you can't bid for less than 4* (which is the Vinoy) or you may get that. It is over 15 miles away from downtown.

Other options are the Ponce de Leon, where you've stayed before, the Hollander Hotel or several other downtown boutiques that are often $100 or less a night.

Another option, since it's of a decent duration, is vrbo.com, homeaway.com or airbnb.com.

A last ditch effort to squeeze a few more bucks out of a stay is to book a refundable hotel reservation and use backbid.com to get other hotels to try to beat that offer. I've had some success in getting multiple bids lower than my original reservation.
