Relocating to FL for husbands job. We have been looking at houses around the area. Palm Harbor, Trinity, Land O Lakes, Lutz. We like the Centex homes in Lutz. My husband will be working near Scherer Dr N St Petersburg. What will commute be like. Too far? And what is your opion of Lutz. Thank in advance.

That is a pretty good hike. I would recommend looking more toward South Tampa. I live in Land O lakes bordering Lutz and it is a minimum of an hour to get to St Petes with no traffic

My wife drove from 4th St. N St.Pete to the Lutz area of SR54 and US41 daily for almost 2 years.
Not only did it put about 30K in one year on her car but the traffic was horrible.
She worked mid nights so she would head to Lutz( home) in the AM and to St.Pete is the evenings, for the most part she was going the opposite of the majority of traffic.
She said she would never do this again for any job.

That would be pretty awful...plenty of nice places in Pinellas, you don't need this commute.

I wouldn't do that drive. I live in Carrollwood and my job is moving to Carillon in St. Pete. I am already considering renting this house out and then renting something in Pinellas. BTW - Carrollwood is much much closer than Lutz.

Mapquest says 30 miles on veterans to arrive. Do you all still think traffic would be too bad and not a good decision?

It all depends on the time of the day. Also be aware that the Veterans is under construction. They are making the 4 lane road into 8 lanes. That should tell you something.

If your husband left the house at 6:30am, he could be their by 7:10am.
If he left at 7:00am, he would be cutting it close to be their by 8:00am.
From 7:00am until 8:30am, it would take him an hour of bumper to bumper, stop and go traffic to get there.

The return is worse. Crossing the Howard Frankland bridge is the problem.
If he left at 5:00pm to drive home, don't expect him to arrive home until at least 6:30pm.
If he leaves at 5:30pm, don't expect him home before 7pm.
If he waited until 7pm to leave, he could be home at 7:40pm.

Those are averages...
When, not if there is an accident on the bridge, this happens sometimes weekly, then the commute can add 30 minutes to an entire hour.
Personally, at least six to nine times per year, an accident on the HF bridge has added 30 to 90 minutes of time to my commute across the bridge.

Then there is time of the year...
From Halloween to Memorial day, expect snowbirds to add to that much more traffic.
Starting tomorrow until Memorial day, expect school traffic and buses.
Should I mention the tropical storms that wash over the expressways?

I would really consider other builder instead of Centex... And as eveyone stated, yes, the commute is not going to be fun

If you're already moving anyway, why not move to the same area as the job?

McMansion affordability?
