Att park in San Francisco...The trop would fit right in and the best part is taxpayers would only pay for ??? the rest could be paid by other entities. The only problem is giving up the waterfront but hey the revenue generated and the businesses that would be spawned would be well worth it.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Tropicana baseball stadium. If that's not good enough, then the owner of the team can pay for a new one.

I don't even like baseball and could care less if they demolished the Trop and didn't built anything to replace it. The whole concept of us taxpayers having to finance another baseball stadium, when the one they have is in perfect shape, is flat out stupid.

Couldn't agree more.

Also, I think it's really silly to compare ourselves to any city in California.

The reality is that $50 Million is no longer available since some of the money has already been wasted. To start this whole process again and get a majority to agree upon it seems impossible, unless someone has some really great idea that nobody has thought of yet. The other two design finalists would be lucky to get a double digit percentage of support.

I think some people believe we need a pier because St. Pete had been known for its pier in the early days. This is dangerous thinking. Times change... any proposed public spending should be judged based on its own merit in the current time and place. At one point in history it made business sense to fly from downtown St. Pete to Tampa.

Impossible to spend money that's already been set aside for a construction project? We have tens of millions of dollars and there is no fight over whether to spend it. Both mayoral candidates want a pier, city council wants a pier, even the people who started the "Stop the Lens" movement want a pier. That's not recipe for inaction. Picking a design should be easy at this point. The only people who were vocal about the design last go-round were the "Stop the Lens" people who thought the existing pier is iconic. Give them an upside down pyramid. Done.

I don't think it would be wise for us to plan as if the Rays were going to be in St. Pete very long. Insofar as they want to leave due to poor attendance, a downtown ballpark would be less convenient for people driving in because parking would be worse. You know, we already have a waterfront ballpark downtown. It's (nearly) vacant because the Rays moved spring ball to Port Charlotte. They don't want to be here.

I'm not getting the rationale of replacing the pier with a baseball stadium when theres a perfectly fine baseball stadium a few blocks away.

This is a joke, right?

Build the stadium further out from the team's fan base than the Trop? Nobody goes to the games as it is. You want to put it even further away from the highway by wedging it into a tiny little surface road laden corridor? Genius.

And how do you propose to mitigate traffic problems if a stadium at the pier were to attract more fans (which it wouldn't)?

One of the biggest complaints about the current location of the Rays' stadium is the location - so would moving the stadium east a few blocks improve attendance much? Doubt it.
