........looks a lot like the piers in California!

So why the hell did they propose such wacky designs?

Well, this looks cheesy, but it's for entertainment right? don't we have enough walkways? (especially those that lead nowhere?)

It's the budget. The budget for The Lens was big enough, but if it actually included things that people wanted or mimicked something like the Navy Pier in Chicago, the budget would need to be at least ten times as much. The money just isn't there for anything like that.

Yeah, that's exactly who we need to emulate: a city with the fiscal responsibility of Chicago.

Places like Bayside Miami and many other cities water front attractions bring in money-It is a place the whole family can come and see and hear and taste all kinds of stuff, I dont get the lack of attendance in ST Pete except I found the surrounding areas for parking scarce and a lack of interest for those who visit here. Why did the new mall across the street fail? I did not like the traffic maze, it is just like Channelside,, horrible commute to that destination, lack of entertainment, maybe expensive? and scary surroundings, especially at night. before they build, they need to see why they failed. Now channelside filing BK13 it will be years now before things can be fixed there... MY take- is Tampa Bay folks are into sports and that is IT- they ar homebodies, and the visitors only come to beach n fish if not Clearwater Beach be another South Beach, with lots of restaurants, clubs etc etc. Pinellas is one of the most conservative counties and it will eventually make the area it into a desolate desert, IF the RAYS pull out- it is over folks. I visited the northen towns, palm harbor and Tarpon Springs- basically nothing but quaint towns,,, see it once- your done, and for the young people- flat line_______. they are your future visitors,,,($$$)

Tiny - Baywalk failed because "thugs" took over and made people afraid to go there. To some extent that still exists downtown, although it's a lot better these days. Crime has to be addressed and people need to feel safe or nothing will thrive. That Baywalk has been purchased and is undergoing renovation as far as I know. The Pier wasn't thriving because there wasn't much there to draw people. Parking is excellent there by the way, we park there all the time. St. Pete has great parking, way better than downtown Tampa.

Here's to hoping they come up with something great for the new Pier.

Maybe you should quit typing and leave your basement just once to visit downtown St Pete. It is packed with locals and visitors every day of the week, and many more at night. You obviously have not been there in years and you haven't read a newspaper in that time, either. Downtown St Pete is getting a new bar or restaurant EVERY WEEK. Tampa wishes their downtown was as hot as St Pete's is.

St Pete doesn't need a money-losing farce like a pier. If it's such a great idea, maybe Tampa should build one. Now THAT downtown is a desolate desert.

Tampa's downtown is about the worst I've ever seen. It's not hard to figure out why - There is nothing... NOTHING to do there after 5pm. Bring in the food/entertainment options and watch downtown Tampa begin to burst at the seams. They're already overflowing with young people filling up the overpriced condos. Give them something to do and the rest of us a reason to drive down after work and design the space in a logical manner.
