Ybor City is still transitional, but I wouldn't call it a "bad" area. Once you're between Centro Ybor and Adamo Drive I always feel quite safe. Even after bar hopping I usually park near the trolley/HART building and have never been mugged nor have felt threatened.

Obviously you don't want to leave your doors unlocked etc. Just like any REAL city you gotta have "street smarts." Tampa is slowly evolving....

If you seek trouble...trouble will get you!

I agree. There is a killing about every week from the many clubs and drunks.

The area the OP is talking about is a good distance from the clubs and is in one of the worst slums in Tampa. If they are still considering moving there I would recommend driving around the neighborhood at night. That area has a few brave urban pioneers with nice homes, but it still has a very long way to go.

I used to go down that way a lot about 10 years ago. Are you the urban pioneer type? Ybor is a historic area that has been around a long time and has undergone many changes over the decades. In the 70's it was a desolate slum but has improved over the years. Ybor City is a party area. Lots of bars, restaurants and night clubs. Are you familiar with Greenwich Village in NYC? I'd put it in that category. The club scene is what brings the criminal element there. The later in the evening, the worse it gets. However, the area is pretty well policed.

Would I live there? Heck no. Any place would be better. But hey, it depends on what you're looking for. If its only cheap rent, go elsewhere.

How come living there is so expensive? The rents I've seen are outrageous! Like over 1000 for a 1 bedroom. Of course I'm not talking about the outskirts.

I love Ybor, but the nice area is fairly small. Right now it is bordered by Adamo on the south, I-275 to the north, 22nd st on the east and about 14th st on the west.
Now that being said, if you are a brave soul, you may consider going east of 22nd st. The new truck bypass is almost complete, meaning no more truck traffic on 21st and 22nd. This has always been a barrier for Ybor to expand. The east side of 22nd is part of the historic district, but it didn't take off due to inaccessibility from the truck traffic. Once the bypass is complete, the city will probably make 21st and 22nd 2 lanes along with some traffic calming measures. The city has already done a lot of improvements along 7th past 22nd.
You'll start seeing a lot of investment interest in the east side of Ybor once the bypass is complete.

Once again folks, the address posted was for V.M Ybor, not Ybor City commercial district. It's a terrible place to live. I hope she reads my earlier post on it!!!

I wouldn't want to live there. I used to work over on 4th street (small little office building) from 430pm-130am. Every night I would see cops. One actually parked in the lot behind us. While I felt safe seeing the cops there - there is a reason why the cops were there every night.

What college are you going to? UT? USF? There are a lot of college living type places by USF. Also - Carlton Arms on Fletcher has studio apartments.
