... do you live there as well or do you commute? If you commute, generally where from and how long is your commute time?

I've been looking at housing in the greater St. Pete area and finding that it's mostly smaller, older homes or newish townhomes that are up for sale. We would really prefer to live & work & be near the school rather than do a lot of driving. But it's looking like that's not going to be the reality.

My instinct is not to buy an older home - for all the obvious reasons.

I would love opinions from those who live or work in the St. Pete area.

Thank you.

What are the obvious reasons for not buying an older home? North and south of St. Pete is chock full of new homes in planned communities-maybe look there.

Older homes require more maintenance. An inspection is only going to catch so much. I don't want to buy a home and within 2 years the a/c unit needs replacing or some such. Also, you run into the issue of - is there lead paint? is there asbestos in the drywall compound? Not to mention they were not built to current storm codes.

St. Pete is pretty built out as far as new homes go. Maybe look at this link for newer homes.

Saint Petersburg FL Real Estate - 4190 Listings - Zillow

St. Pete is a great city, IMO.

My office just moved into the Carillon area of St. Pete, I live in Northdale and will be taking the Veterans to 275 starting Monday. I will be leaving my house here at 6:30am. I'll let you know what my commute ends up being.

That should be a fun commute... Where was your office located before the move?

West Shore, right by the International Mall. I would take Dale Mabry straight down

From west shore to carillion parkway area is 15 min tops in the morning from 7 to 830 anytime in that window, add that to your old commute, it takes me anywhere from 20 to 25 minutes to go from Palma ceia to quadrillion area in the morning, your problem is going to be the afternoon going east on the Howard frankland after 430 it's hit and miss really depends how you handle the exit to the veterans or in my case westshore that exits its always backed up you have to work your way in around the middle of the line otherwise it's an extra 20 min.
