I really have my heart set on moving to St. Petersburg from the Fort Myers area, but I'm a little worried about finding a job. I work in Human Resources as an HR Rep/Coordinator and would be looking for the same type of position. My husband is working on his Engineering BA still trying to decide if to go with Civil or Mechanical but leaning to mechanical. I saw about a page worth of jobs on Careerbuilder of HR jobs but nothing much in his field. We're very much middle class so we can't afford to live anywhere we want but would like to be close to work if possible. We don't want to get stuck on the outskirts like we ended up in Fort Myers (we live in lehigh). It takes me about 40 minutes to get to work right now without traffic.

Any of you that live in the St. Pete area, do most people work in Tampa?

The Carillon Section has a lot of businesses- you should look there. Also downtwon St. Pete.

As for your husband- lots of engineering consulting firms in both Tampa and St. Pete- should not be hard for him (PBS&J, TBE Group, Parsons, LFR, BCI, Faller Davis, CH2M, Golder, Geosyntec, JOnes Edmunds, etc.)

I would just make sure to secure a job before coming to the area. I'm not as familiar with engineering, but I know others in other professions (especially attorneys) who had trouble securing employment after coming to the bay area. As with any place, just look before you come.
I would say many work in St. Pete, many work in Tampa...

Angler thanks for the leads. Looks like they're all in Tampa but some close to SP. The job always comes first. Looks like maybe he'll need to take up an interest in water/wastewater management. Most of these firms have an environmental slant to them.

I grew up and lived in that same area,Alva, once you do find work here you will never look back, dont cross out jobs in manatee or sarasota completely, going south in the morning and north in the evenings on 75 is nothing like tampa rush hour, its only 1 hour south to port charlotte, bradenton and sarasota are more like 30-45 minutes,if you live in pinellas and work here or hillsborough, you might as well count on a 45 minute commute even if its only 15 miles, its even worse when the snow birds are down here, but its still paradise.

Raytheon is in St. Pete and check out some of the smaller manufacturing and design firms in Pinellas for mechanical engineering.
