Nice! But do you think they signed him for one year to have him to bargain for another deal mid-season or will they use him for the entire 2014? I'm hoping the latter. It would be nice to keep him around before he goes to free agency.

Very well trade him early or before mid season - early if they can get some good prospects. Later (July) if the season turns sour early on and the team doesn't have a chance - agree, would be nice to keep him for the season.

Well, he's up for free agency in 2016 right? So if they were planning on keeping him long term, I'd think they'd try to renegotiate now so they don't lose him and get nothing in return. I hate seing key players go but yeah, they are probably using 2014 to test the market to see what they can get while making a run for the playoffs again in '14.

Matt Joyce gets $3.7 mil/season for what? Striking out? I'd get up there and do that for millions less.

18 homers in 413 AB's last year wasn't bad. Only Longoria had more. Five years experience and career .340 OBP makes him worth every penny of his salary. Plus he plays right field several times better than Wil Myers who unfortunately will be getting more time there.

With the current wild card system, even sub .500 teams are still in the playoff hunt at the trade deadline. The Rays would have to be 15+ games out for a mid-season trade to actually make sense. Realistically, they'll probably always be within a few games of a wild card spot and at least one of their starting 5 will be injured or stinking. How do you trade away your ace then?

Alot of it has to do with where a player is in his contract and if the franchise is trying to rebuild and plan more the future vs. now. The challenge for the Rays organization is $$. To keep a player like Price after 2015 will require coughing up a hefty multi-million dollar contract and if he has a stellar 2014 season, it'll be top dollar. From what I understand, they Rays unfortunately do not have the same ability to carry such a large payroll.

After 2015, Price is eligible for free agency. It would be senseless to keep him 'til then and then lose him to that with no chance of trading him for some great prospects (or whatever else they decide). By signing him for one year, they increase his marketability for a pending trade.

Personally? I hate seeing a star player go from a team I invest my emotional time in. It will be interesting to see how this season plays out. Maybe there's something else brewing that we don't see yet and Price will stay. All I know is, I'm looking forward to spring training!
