This is aweful. This would be an excellent story for 8 on your side. I bet they could get the cat adopted within two hours of airing.

As much as I respect our military members I really wish they would refrain from getting pets until their lives are stable or they have families that can care for their pets while deployed. Hopefully this cat will be adopted with all the attention he's getting.

Agreed and this soldier doesn't have any family members who could have cared for the cat instead?

This is the tip of the iceberg. You don't really want to hear the stories of what has happened with pets - we've been in wars since 2001-ish. While overseas (Germany), soldiers were abandoning pets a lot before deploying to Afghanistan/Iraq. The worst was the guy who leased his dog outside in the cold (cold German winters) and it wasn't discovered for weeks.

I remember reading a story a while back were the Pentagon was trying to get harsher penalties for troops who abandon pets. I'm not sure what ever became of this or if it had any impact.

Anyway, it sounds like this soldier had good intentions but they didn't have a good friend.

A friend of mine posted this link also on her facebook. My husband and I went down there today to adopt Rocky! He was there, but he is safe, because of a FB page. Urgent Cats of Tampa Bay. They are going to take him in, and see if they can get in touch w/ the solider. I got this from the FB page, and also when I spoke to HCAS.

When we there, we also fell in love w/ another cat - Rocket. It turns out this solider actually had TWO kitties. Rocket and Rocky were both brought in by "Robin." We ended up adopting Rocket and will pick him up once he is neutered and had his shots!

One thing also we are going to do is contact Urgent Cats of Tampa Bay and let them know our situation w/ Rocket and how we were told the same Robin brought in Rocky and Rocket. As much as I love this addition to our little family, if it in fact this is also the soliders kitty - when he returns home, I would love to be able to give it to him.

Omg, thank you and bless you. When I read the story of this poor cat on Facebook I almost cried. I can't even imagine a "friend" giving a cat to a shelter after promising to take care of him. I've been contacting everyone I know trying to find a home for the soldier's cat before it was too late. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
