How are the workers being extorted? many people work off the clock or are made to stay late- rem they might have a little one to pick up from day care etc. or a BUS to catch... many I work with run after buses,,, and if you don't work you just done get paid no benefits. I wont get into the under the table employees here.

How is this slavery? The workers are getting paid, and in many cases time and a half. LOL... really where so I can switch PT - Thanksgiving is NOT a given. they can say it's not celebrated in our company --n adios.

The police, fire department, hospital workers, telephone operators, and many others have always worked on holidays. YES see their rate of pay... also this is their career... and they never close even a 5th grader knows that... wally world 24-7 / McD's we all know that/ they making a change to compete.

People are going to shop, holiday or not and business will be there to meet the demand.
I personally hope nobody shows up, up north, old ladies are picketing for the workers,,, CLOSE T day!

I agree, retail should be closed on Thanksgiving. I also hope nobody shows up to shop and then the big biz's will realize that the public opinion guides their decision making.

Working "off the clock" is in direct violation of Federal and State labor laws. Any lawyer would take the case for a person who was "forced" to work off the clock.

I am sure it happens, but I blame the worker who tolerates such a situation and not doing something about it.

The worker needs to take the necessary action to prevent this from happening by reporting the employer to authorities or simply sue them.

How do you "blame the worker" exactly when the only thing the "worker" can do is "work"! There are no UNIONS to protect this worker, if this worker does something about it he gets fired.

This post completely contradicts the one above which I am not going to address because a 5 year old knows "who" is running this country.

Big business is running the gov; wake up;...where did Rick Scott came from? a $9 an hour call center job? or a multi million dollar BUSINESS? Can Joe from the Call center run this state coming from his high turnaround job that pays crap for him to stay there 24/7 & gives him no holidays off? Why does this person running this call center feels entitled to not allow his workers a HOLIDAY OFF?

Bank of America's call center is closed during the weekend, so it's possible to give your employees a deserved break! working 24/7 for minimum wage is slavery these days in 2013 simply because prices are not what they were in 1950. Everything went up, but I can see how for those who just "buy" without looking at the price this can be flash news. Those who buy the same items each week can clearly see the difference in prices. This buy one and get one crap is not really a deal because they bump up the price for "the buy one" and you get stuff that's about to expire shelf life. Produce less, price lower and you'll still make profits. My pantry is not a store front.

I will say this again: let's not compare apples and oranges: ER/911 are there so you don't die that day if possible; you can live without a few channels if you DVR breaks! Trust me, you'll live! No need to hold those folks there non stop. Play cards, play a bored game, talk to your wife, see what she's been up to in the last 10 years! find out what grade your kids are in...etc....stores, and call centers dealing with computer crap and cable can be closed, and those people can be left alone for one day from listening to you whine about your AOL connection!

If I could propose this anywhere, I would propose that a holiday day be declared a "non-shopping" day! People have no electricity elsewhere in the world, no clear water to drink, no clothes or shoes and y'all act like desperate animals to add another freakin TV to your walls! or more toys to support Chinese workers paid $0.002 an hour! Ridiculous & Embarrassing. Heck, people live here in awful conditions...kids abandoned in orphanages...use that money to help someone instead! (No, I am not telling you what to do, just what you should do).

To that person all I have to say is that I feel sorry for them.

Business are open on holiday's because it fills a need, its about obtaining a comparative advantage, if the consumers wouldn't consume it then it wouldn't exist. There are no villains in this other than the consumers, for this to stop people have to stop shopping on Thanksgiving its that simple, the system is setup so companies have to make more money than the quarter before its an insatiable thirst for profits, it requires human sacrifice it always has just before you couldn't see them, it was people in the third world but now that they are your neighbors its just more front center, it sucks but it is the most prosperous economic system the world has ever know.

It is up to the individual to protect their rights under the law. If they feel they are being wronged, they can take action to make it right. That is how this country was founded. The people were not happy with the situation given to them and made changes happen.

Re: Rick Scott. Read his biography and find out how he came who he is. Nobody handed him anything. He worked for it. He applied himself. He reached goals that he set for himself.

Tell me, why did Joe from the call center take the job? He couldn't do better?

Prices are not what they were in 1950, but the minimum wage is not what it was in 1950 either.

I guess you feel it would be better if the call center jobs all were outsourced to overseas where they
don't have to worry about holidays.

You and a few others on this forum are really stuck on the minimum wage boat. The fact is in 2012, there were 3.6 million hourly paid workers in the United States with wages at or below the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. These workers made up 4.7 percent of the 75.3 million workers age 16 and over who were paid at hourly rates.

Take into account that in that 4.7 percent are tipped employees such as servers.
When the day is done, a good server is doing a whole lot better than the minimum wage.
Also part of that 4.7 percent are teenagers who know nothing about anything and are at the
beginnings of their working careers. These are facts according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

You are correct. There are many people in many countries with no clear water to drink, no clothes or shoes, lack of food, etc. Ain't it great that we live in a country where this doesn't happen. Nobody in this country should suffer those conditions thanks to the various safety nets and programs provided to them by your friend the GOVERNMENT to which we pay taxes to in order to have those safety nets and programs provided to those who require it. Everything is available to those in need; free housing, free food, free clothing, free health care, free cell phones, free automobiles, free income.

As far as purchasing. If you buy the same item week after week it would be wise to stock up on those items when you find the best price for that item. If ketchup is on sale, grab 6 bottles and store it. If butter is on sale, stock up. It's called being a smart consumer. I like asparagus, fresh. I won't buy it at $4.00 a pound. I will buy it at $2.00 and enjoy it and wait for the next time it is at a reasonable (in my opinion) price. I may have to go to another store to get the best price or I can be stupid and take it at the asking price of my usual place of shopping. Whether you realize it or not, we Americans live in a consumer society. We consume goods from all over the world. If there is something we want, we purchase it at the best price possible.

If it is important to you that you do not work on holidays, weekends, nights, days, whatever, that is your choice. No one is forced into a job. People take what they want and disregard the rest. If their skills and abilities are only good enough to take a job with negative conditions then that is not the problem of employers.

DUNNDFRNT (wouldnt let me send reps) makes what I believe to be the most important statement. Our system "the free markets" are all consumer driven. As he states, if they dont show up they wont open. Businesses are only reacting to the desire of consumers (our fellow Americans) voicing a need/want/desire to shop on Thanksgiving.

I think people who are passionate about traditions being threatened want to direct their disapproval at the faceless corporate entity but its the wrong target, the target is US!

My dad died at 86-what he said was most important was to "balance" my life- there must be time for HOME- traditions- rest-etc and family,,, You don't think everybody is entitled to that/ so be it--- Today I did my shopping and wished all the sales clerks etc. a Happy Thanksgiving- some didn't even know what to say. That is not a reality- and now for MY family either-

Happy Thanksgiving to ALL-

Enjoy your day folks... maybe one day you will see why we should have NOT given up our "special family days" and created a world solely of commercialism and materialism.

PS just signed a petition not to shop on Thanksgiving DAY---
