Check out St Petersburg which has a similar laidback coastal vibe. There are some great neighborhoods to check out like Kenwood, Allendale-Five Points and Crescent Heights where you can score a rental house in that price point. If you're stuck on apartments the Gateway/Gandy area on the extreme NE side is a good area to check out and convenient to both downtown Tampa and downtown St Pete. There are a lot of things to do in St Pete and the cost of living in tandem is a pretty good deal I think.

Actually a Gandy/Gateway commute to downtown Tampa or the airport area is still better than most mainland commutes.

Tampabay has a lot of parks.. I mean a lot- walking the dogs on a leash is bountiful - if you have $ to spend you will find lots to do. but its not a city like SD
