My husband and I are arriving tonight to visit for the weekend. We are checking out a retirement community. Is there anything going on in the Tampa area that we shouldn't miss? Any major events, etc.? Thanks.

Florida Orchestra plays Bond music, RV show at the Fairgrounds, Bolts are playing a day game Saturday. Porgy and Bess Broadway at the Straz. Herman Hermits at Busch. Not saying these are "don't miss" sorts of things - we don't have to many of those except withe Super Bowl or RNC comes to town. Oh yeah, there's the Vinoy Park fest going on this weekend, too (Leon Russell is one of the acts). What retirement community are you visiting?

LOL re the blues festival. We are coming from the Memphis area. Plenty of blues here. But the RV show sounds good. My husband wants to buy another RV.

We are looking at Riverview in Ruskin. It's on the river and we kayak and have a small sailboat, so we thought we would check it out.

Valencia Lakes in Tampa, Florida - A GL Homes Community should be on your list of retirement communities to visit while in Riverview area - huge lake - you can kayak on........big fishing group as well. Might be worth your while to visit it (US 301) near Ruskin. I don't work for them, just have lived here for a few years. You don't have to be over 55 (80/20 rule), but there are other rules (about kids in the household. Be careful about buying near rivers, oceans/flood zones due to insurance costs. Homes in my community start around $150-160k.

Two beautiful communities you should check out are Valencia Lakes in Ruskin and Mira Bay in Apollo Beach. I've heard Waterset is nice, as well, but I've never been there. Have fun and enjoy your exploratory trip. We retired and relocated here about 2.5 years ago from the Midwest and just love the weather, sunshine, blue skies, natural beauty, people, and life style. You can actually pursue outdoor activities every day of the year. It's amazing.

We are retired and live in Mirabay in Apollo Beach. We moved here at the end of last year from outside the Atlanta area. Mirabay is not a retirement community but it is on the water and there are many things to do.
