Saw a critter walking up a Gulfport street today around 1PM. Thought at first that it was a raccoon, but it seemed thinner, less furry, lighter colored and taller than the raccoons I remember seeing when we lived in Virginia.

Are there coatis or ringtails in this part of Florida?

What is a "Coatis"? Do you mean Coyote?

There is a vast difference between the two animals and it is a very obvious difference. To know for sure what animal you saw a photo would be good.

A Coati is a relative of the raccoon and wondered if they are in this part of Florida. Coatis are not nocturnal (raccoons are nocturnal) and since I saw this animal in the middle of the day, I wondered what it was.

There definitely are coati in Florida. It would be odd to see one walking up the street in Gulfport though, even if they are diurnal.

The racoons around here ARE surprisingly tall and are fairly lean. That being said, Wikipedia says that this critter has a presence in Florida;

It might have been a Possum. It's not completely out of the ordinary for them to be out during the daytime if rousted from their den by noise or some disturbance.

No it wasn't a possum (have seen many of those in other locales in the past).

It was quite tall, thinner than any other raccoon I've ever seen, brown in color. Definitely raccoon family. As Vaughwilliams posted, perhaps FL raccoons are simply a bit different looking than the ones from up North.

Didn't get a good look at its facial features. Will keep a lookout for it and try to do a better job of ID'ing it and/or photo it.
