what about people you work with or go to school with? or do you play sports - join a golf, tennis club - or join a running group (Fit2Run, St Pete) - they have weekly running groups, I believe.

I agree with meetup. I moved here from CT 6 years ago, and I found meetup, and it's been great.
Met some great friends. I live in Wesley Chapel, and joined meetup groups over on this side of the bay - but the good thing about meetup no matter what your interest, you will find something.

I probably had the easiest time meeting people in St. Pete out of anywhere that I have lived. Just getting out, going to the gym regularly, people were very friendly. It didn't seem to me like people kept to themselves? I'm not sure what you mean by young though, i'm 33.
