LOL..I should have said they would START on the rail in 2010...they need to get everything in order and sent to the Fed Govt by June 2009, I doubt they can have the system up in running in less than a year...

If you want to bring in more money, i don't know why politicians haven't brought up the idea of simply taxing income (ie-state income tax). It would solve a alot of problems that they currently have such as the need for a light rail system, more help to homeowners in the form of homeowners insurance, etc. I don't know how sensitive a topic this is but if they even taxed 1 - 2% of income in this state, it would be HUGE.

Just a thought

Default driving isn't free, either

if you want mass transit, how would you pay for it, esp if you propose less taxes.
With all the money that gets poured into road and highway construction, maintenance, emergency services, traffic control, etc. Do you think driving automobiles is not subsidized? How about using impact fees from wetland filling developers out in the county and give the incentives for urban redevelopment? A regional government with a growth plan and maybe a growth boundary would be a start.
High density, compact, smart growth complements mass transit. People can't imagine transit now because it takes 10 minutes to drive around the walls and gates to get to a major road that might only be a few yards away.

I am toying with moving to Florida and Tampa being one of the cities.

Here in Charlotte we have had the extra 1/2 cent sales tax for a year or so and our Light Rail system just opened Nov 24th, 2007.

One thing I found odd is that Clubs in Tampa close early (3am). They are open to 4am and sometimes 6am here in Charlotte and 5am in Miami & Ft Lauderdale!

Overall Tampa seems to be a very nice city!

I'd love to see the clubs stay open till 5 or even 6am, but stop serving alcohol at 3am. Its a sad situation to see the bars close right at the time they stop serving, and then the people have to get into cars and drive home

this is one reason i think we need more immigrants. we get so much from them, if we can attract the more ambitious ones.

makes no sense to bring them over, train them, then send them back!!

The transportation is definitely an issue there. I support that beltway option they've proposed, and that can be paid for with tolls. And a light rail system wouldn't hurt anybody. I think a better transportation system would put area growth on a more controlled track, too.

Pinellas County is pretty screwed as far as transportation goes, though.

What?
Wider roads, more lanes....more freeways....more traffic lights-it's bad here in Brandon with no lights and loads of accidents!
