Would appreciate opinions regarding apartment/rental communities that would be a wise choice for a 30-something couple (no children yet), who will be moving down to work at the Hard Rock Casino and get a feel for the area before making the decision to relocate permanently and choosing a location to possibly purchase a home. Ideally, the community should be in an area within a reasonable commute to the Casino, but also located fairly centrally so that it will be possible to get a feel for the area as a whole and enjoy all that Tampa has to offer. Please keep in mind that I am asking this question as a person who has never been to Tampa and has no concept of the area or point of reference as of yet.

Thank you!

The immediate area around the casino is UN-desirable, you won't be walking to work. I hate to use a Realtor buzz-word, but there is an "up-and-coming" area called Palm River. It, too, is near undersirable areas but there are very nice places, too, like any major city. It sounds like it might suit your needs. KB homes has a new development there.
The casino is out of town a few minutes to the East and there are a lot of bad areas between the city and there. You will have a lot to choose from working at that location. Look into Tampa Heights and other neighborhoods just north of downtown, and try to stay south of Hillsborough Ave. You'll really need to have a look for yourself when you get into town. It's not a big city, Tampa, and the streets are either East/West or North/South, making easy to figure out your way.
Good luck, and welcome to Tampa.

Since you are looking to get a feel for the area and enjoy all that Tampa has to offer, I may suggest South Tampa(areas south of Kennedy Blvd between Westshore Blvd and Bayshore Blvd). About a 10-20 minute commute to the casino depending where in South Tampa you find something...lots of great neighborhoods, and close to most everything Tampa has to offer.
