They are easily assessable with a Google Search.

I would stay away from companies that use different inspectors. Look for someone with consrtuction background for many years. We used 2 different inspectors highly recommended online (google reviews, yelp) only to be very unhappy. Going back and reading all reviews I realized most reviews were either fake or written by realtors (who are not really interested in good inspectors who can find something that will kill the deal). So watch out for reviews!

Ask around at work or anyone you feel you can trust.

If you bought the house with a realtor than the realtor maybe able to help you which is the benefit of the free service since a buyer doesn't pay for the realtor and in some cases builders even have better prices when a realtor is present.

If you contract to build a new home, your home inspector should be employed before the pins go in the ground and perform inspections at various phases of construction. If you're buying a ready now new home, almost any home inspector can check outlets and run dishwashers. It's too late then to know what's behind the drywall. But generally speaking, I much prefer a home inspector that has a general contractor license and years of building experience over a highly marketed internet company. At a minimum, whoever you choose should at least be members of ASHI, NACHI, and other inspector trade associations that require additional testing from their members.
