Thought it would be interesting to see where our CityData community stands on the upcoming election. Anonymous poll, of course.

This will be my first time voting in a Florida election. Surprised to have seen near zero discussion here so far with the election really close.

EDIT: I suppose I never look at the general Florida forum, as I see some political discussion now. Still interested in our area's opinion.

Other than your curiosity about this particular area of Florida, I don't think you will be able to relate this to the general consensus or outcome. From what I understand, the metros here vote very differently, based on completely different demographics. Transplants tend to group to similar areas, making for skewed numbers than if it were just native borns. FWIW - This will be the first time I pass on an election....most likely. The only thing that could bring me in is my wanting the marijuana bill to pass for medical needs, but I would still pass on the governor race.

Oh, I understand that...this is just to get a feel for where this community stands at, I know it won't be anywhere near the general representation.

Florida is interesting to me because of how many transplants are in the state and likely a large percentage of voters don't have as much residential history/experience (I would assume) as compared to other states. Quite a diverse voice within a state.

I'm torn on voting for Wyllie or not voting at all. I can't bring myself, nor see how anyone else could, to vote for either Scott or Crist with all of the trash talking I see on TV. It's 100% trash. I've learned zero about each candidate's platform through their television/radio ads and it's kind of sad. It's all attacking the opponent. Many people I've talked with feel the same way and it's turned them off to the election. My generation is starting to care less and less about voting and campaigns like this one only make you wonder why. We need less lifetime politicians in our elected positions, in my opinion.

I am interested in the amendments, as well.

I voted for Wyllie.
I know, wasted vote, but most people, Democrat or Republican, agree the two party system sucks.
If we can get enough people to temporarily Sacrifice their vote, eventually, we may make a difference.

I'm in the "anybody but Crist" camp. If you asked me what politician was most clearly out for himself above all else, it's that guy.

I just wish there was a way they could both lose.

I would like to see what the state budget looks like without income tax and property tax. What would that look like pay per use police force and fire department, no schools, all toll roads? I am taking about the libertarian platform

Well, you would replace the property tax funds from increased sales tax...which I am perfectly okay with and think it makes the most sense.

I'd rather pay 10% sales tax than property tax every year.

Also, it is a "fair tax" in the sense that it hits everyone who buys something...residents and tourists alike. Currently, I have to pay property tax as a home owner but a renter doesn't.

I think it could work with proper planning. One thing we do know is there is an excess in spending and fat could be cut out...probably not the 30% that Wyllie has projected, but it is there.

You couldn't cover that hole with a 3% increase a more realistic number is 20-25% consumption tax, which people will avoid and will cause the economy to slow down because capitalism works on spending, money multiplier concept, then you have people who aren't homeowner's they will suffer the artificial inflation that will cause, taxes should be based on your ability to pay, otherwise you are shifting the burden from the privileged to the under privileged, I say this as a member of a high earner household.

I guess I am thinking that the pool of people who buy things daily is much larger than those who own homes in Florida...so it wouldn't take as much to offset the difference. I'm not an economist, though.

Not sure I agree "people would avoid" because there isn't much of an option when you must buy items to live. Yeah, you might think twice about buying something really expensive...but how often do folks buy items where the tax ruins the equation for them?
