Wow, it's been a long time since I posted here. I was originally asking about NYC because I had a job prospect there. Job prospect fell through, which was awful at the time but it all worked out for the best.

I'm now staying at home and writing full time, and looking to buy a house in a few months.

I am renting a house on a lake and really enjoy being on the water. However, I'm in the Orlando area, which I don't like.

I was looking at houses on the Alafia River, some of which are quite affordable, but who knows, there may be a reason for that. Bad neighborhood, perhaps? I'm hoping for a house for $300,000 or less. Preferably not in a sketchy high crime neighborhood.

Does anyone have any recommendations for nice areas on the Alafia River, or other areas where there is canal front property and it is reasonably close to a city?

I'd be curious to know what the insurance those houses have on the river.

Well, that's a good point. Flood insurance would be something to think about.

I would question where on the Alafia. Depending on how far upstream you are, flooding might not be as much of an issue.

I live barely an 1/8 of a mile from the Alafia, but I'm over 30 feet above sea level, and I'm not in a flood zone. That being said, I can't see it...
