Safety at night at St. Petersburg College, Clearwater Campus (Tampa: apartment complex, to rent)

I am seriously considering moving to the Tampa Bay area and attending a degree program at St. Petersburg College, the Clearwater Campus on Drew Avenue which only has evening classes running sometimes until 10 p.m. Due to a horrible night vision problem, I would be taking the bus or a taxi to/from school at those times. I will be looking into a house share situation to keep living expenses down and thus be able to afford living in a decent neighborhood.

BIG questions are, I'm really leery of the crime statistics in the Tampa Bay area, but see they're not so bad in the particular school neighborhood. Can anybody tell me about the safety level of waiting for a bus or taxi in the evening hours from that school??

Also, I'm a motorcyclist and have a small utility trailer. Can anybody tell me what the motorcycle theft rates are like, more specifically, am I going to need to rent a storage unit and keep my motorcycle and trailer locked up just to avoid theft? I'm a single woman and will be alone, so safety important, with the knowledge that being observant of my surroundings, a trusty can of pepper spray...

The St. pete college is safe. I have been to some seminars there at night and have seen nothing wrong at all.

I live very near it. It's a decent area and you'll be ok. Consider the apartment complex right across the street, if it's not too expensive for you.

Great! Thanks so much for responding. Only received two replies and I'm guessing my remark about pepper spray has me coming off as a thug :-( That I am not. I am a 56-y-o woman, 5'1" who wants so badly to move to the area but also wants to be safe!
