Unless you can see underground, looking up at it, there is no telling when a chunk of limestone is going to break and cause a sinkhole. Sure, geologically some areas are more likely to experience them.

As a studying geologist, I can tell you that there are ways and methods of knowing (in general) where sinkholes are likely to happen.

As for the OP, your best bet is to avoid Pasco and Hernando counties as there is substantial sinkhole activity in those areas. Most of Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties are safe, however.

Anyone interested may also want to watch this, as it focused heavily on the Tampa Bay area.

It's from 2008. I guess that's better than nothing.

Looks like Brandon and Valrico are hotspots for sinkhole activity in 2008.

Is there a pattern to look for or do these occur in random places?

I'm wondering how insurance companies look at this to determine coverage.

Please educate me.
Hi Kim, my advise to you is to pick a town and do your due diligence for the property. A lot of municipalities record and map all kinds of activities. For instance here in Dunedin you can call codes and enforcements and they can direct you to the right person to talk to and they can let you know about the property. A word of advice though just don't do that property you need to research the entire neighborhood, this will affect you insurance policy. Then once you find out that information you can talk to an insurance agent. Sinkholes are like lightning you just don't know where they are going to hit next. I personally wouldn't stress myself over them, do your research and you'll be fine. Happy trails!
