I'd like to just do an informal questionnaire here - to help me look at areas if I do end up moving to Tampa. For the past few jobs I've had - in Houston, TX my commute was 16.5 miles one way. In Nashville its 11 miles. Just curious as to what your commute time is like in Tampa?

I don't commute but had the opportunity to drive during rush hour on I-75 yesterday (4-5 pm) and the roadways were pretty congested on I-75 from Fletcher (USF exit) through Brandon going south...the I-75/I-4 interchange was backed up for awhile - not sure if that's a daily thing or an accident occurred - noticed it was like that for both north and south traffic leaving I-75 for I-4.

Once passed Brandon, things cleared up pretty quickly.

Glad I don't have to make that on a daily basis - but it seemed like for the most part the drivers were civil - only a couple of cars swerving in and out of lanes to gain a car-length.

We're a "rural city" but do have our trouble spots for traffic - gotta recon the areas before buying so you know what you're dealing with on a daily basis...

I use the Selmon a lot on a regular basis between South Hillsborough County to downtown Tampa, MacDill AFB and rarely have had traffic. Of course you pay to use that and on daily basis you're looking at $30-60/month.

Veterans expressway into Carrollwood. Luckily I have enough pull with my boss to allow me to manage my own time for the most part, so I leave when traffic has slithered south of my exit and it takes me as little as 20 minutes. That being said I have commuted during the thick of things and it really wasn't too awful until the sugarwood toll plaza and the commute time doubled.

You couldn't pay me to have to drive on Bruce B Downs or live/commute from Brandon. All the time I have to hear about "creative routes" my Brandon-dwelling coworkers try to invent.

In comparison, I live about 30 miles outside of DC and it takes me up to 2 hours to go 28 miles with an average of 1 hr 15 mins.

Once my company transfer goes through I will be commuting from South Tampa near the YMCA to up near International Plaza. Any idea how long this takes in rush hour? 20 minutes?

South Tampa to International will be bad, but not DC bad. You have a few choices too (Dale Mabry, Westshore, etc).

Been there. DC traffic was one of the main reasons I left.

South Tampa to International Plaza area won't be too bad at all. You'll hit a few lights, though, and they're not timed well (if at all). Depending on where in South Tampa, I'd guesstimate around 20 minutes max.

Definitely doable. Thanks. Where in DC? How long have you been out? Anything you miss about up here?
