Curious if people could let me know cost of a few things. Our current electric rates (Long Island, NY) are supposedly some of the highest in the country. Being a numbers guy, trying to get an as accurate as possible cost for my spreadsheet. Could a few of you respond to the following?

1) KwH cost (Total Electric Bill / KwH's used). So if your bill was $100, and you used 1,000 KwH, the KwH cost is $.10.
2) Average electric bill in the summer + approximate size of house
3) Average electric bill when heating pool (maybe the same as above)
4) Annual Homeowners insurance cost

I know all of these vary from person to person and home to home, but just trying to get a general idea. I'm looking at houses in the 3,000 square foot size if that helps.

Thanks!!

1) This varies quite a bit month to month. I looked a few and saw 13.26, 14.56 and 12.79. There are lots of taxes, credits and adjustments on each bill after the electric usage amounts.
2) $150 (1800 sq. ft.)
3) No pool. FYI: summer electric bill averages $120 per month
4) $2900

FYI:
House was built in 1946, about one-third of it is a new large master suite (built in 2008). Older architectural windows in most of house that are not energy efficient.
We have 2 zone heat/ac. One zone is the master suite, so we can turn thermostat up/down during waking hours to save a bit of energy.
We have a hottub we use daily for about an hour.
We have extensive sprinkler system for landscaping (well water) with electric pump motor.
Two people in house, both retired.
We like to be comfortable, especially in winter; we run heat to 74 daytime and 70 at night.
In summer we set thermostat to 79 days, 75 at night. Ceiling fans in every room.
House is all electric (heat/cooking/dryer/hot water heater), no gas.
We pay flood insurance in addition to homeowners.

1. It appears the past few months it has been ~9.1 cents for the first 1,000 kWh. ~11.5 cents above 1,000 kWh. $40 of our last bill was in fees and taxes.

2. Around $350/mo in the summer, 2800 square foot. We are working on improving this, usually keep it 71-72 at night. 77 during day when gone. However, we haven't ran our air conditioning or heat since early November.

3. No pool.

4. $3400/year (we aren't in a flood zone; northern South Tampa)

Home built 1951. Block/masonry. Windows replaced in 2010. Ceiling fans all throughout house (they eat more power than most think). A/C unit was installed in 2012 but is on one end of home where bedrooms are...it has to work really hard to cool rest of home where we play (kitchen/living area).

So are you saying the $40 in fees and taxes isn't part of the ~11.5 cents?

$350 isn't bad in the hottest months.

$3,400 a month is crazy to me for homeowners. But your property taxes and lack of income tax more than make up for it. We pay ~$23,000 between property/state tax and about $1,500 in insurance. And we pay ~18.5 per kwh (taxes/fees included).

Right, the fees and taxes are added after the power consumption rates.

Sadly, $3400 was on the really low side. Most were in the low $4000, although we had one at $2900 but the coverages were too far off from what we wanted.

Our taxes are about $3200 each year...with homestead exemption.

Value of home affects home insurance prices a lot. So if they are paying $3400/year for insurance and the house is only worth $220k then that is really high but if the home is worth $400k then that is not bad at all.

We live in Apollo Beach and we are serviced by Tampa Electric. We pay an energy charge of .05517/kWh for the first 1000 kWh plus a fuel charge of .03559/kWh for the first 1000 kWh. Our bills at this time of year run $60.00 to $80.00 per month. Our highest bill so far was last August - just over $163.00. Our house is a one story, 2200 sq. ft. bungalow.

We do not have a pool. Our last insurance bill was $941.00 which covers our house and belongings. We also pay flood insurance of around $900.00 per year.

Wow, that's cheap electric! As with most everything, Long Island seems to be about hte highest cost in the country.

Your last insurance payment of $941, was that annual? Assuming 6 month payment.

Actually, that is our annual premium, which covers:

Primary Coverages
A) Dwelling: $300,000
B) Other Structures: $6,000
C) Personal Property: $150,000
D) Loss of Use: $30,000
E) Personal Liability: $300,000
F) Medical Payments: $5,000
All Other Perils Deductible: $1,000
Hurricane Deductible: 2% / $6,000

Hope this clarifies what we have. And, I was wrong on the amount of our premium. It is $918.37 per year with Security First Florida.
