The USGCRP Synthesis Report states that data on 19,958 deaths from weather related extreme events from 1970 to 2004 for the US indicates that heat/drought is responsible for the largest share (19.6%), followed by severe weather, defined to include fog, hail, wind and thunderstorm (18.8%) and winter weather (18.1%). This information is sourced to Borden and Cutter (2008), henceforth B&C. [Note that these estimates exclude deaths from excess winter mortality, which is a chronic phenomenon unrelated to extreme weather. Also, note that it's not just global warming, but also the heat island effect that may contribute to excessive deaths in warm weather.]
When Chicago had a heat wave in 1995 750 prople died in heat related deaths the temp was 106 degrees from July 12 to July 16. So yes more people die from the heat. And it gets just as humid in the north east as here because of the great lakes. Try working a auto plant with the paint ovens going or a steel mill with the blast furnaces no fun I did it working at Chrysler corp.

You keep believing that. It gets as humid for a few days and then it cools down for periods. It never gets cooler there. Big difference. The south had a huge snow this year too..is it suffice to say it gets just as snowy in the south as in the North because a snowfall can occur? I think not.

One thing I will say though..the south handles heat very well..in my years in Florida and N.C. you never worried about being hot anywhere inside. In fact it could get downright chilly. You guys have learned AC is your best friend. Buffalo may get 100 inches a year ..but a 6 inch snow in Alabama will cause bedlam.

Florida has zero cases of heart attack while shoveling snow.

No, for sure since this hemisphere doesn't usually get hammered with snow, however a lot of people died of heat strokes and heart attacks due to HEAT while mowing lawns down here!!!!!

Most people know that, but there are a few who like to act as if nobody ever has a heart attack in Floriduh! It's really ridiculous. Plus, if NYC was "that bad" there wouldn't be 8+ million people cramming in Manhattan! Same goes for all the other northern states! Some people think they are really swift for bragging about stuff just for the sake of bragging without a base. There is zero objectivity left.

Good post. I just hate these threads about how terrible the North's weather is at this time of year. Florida is great if you love heat...period. lets not sugarcoat it. We never see these threads made in July !
