dunnndfrnt,
If your husband will be working in Sunny St Pete, Shore Acres Elementary might be a good choice. Here is the link to Pinellas County Schools Pinellas County Schools / Homepage. We also have may private schools in the area that are wonderful Shorecrest Prep, St Raphael Catholic, Canterbury & Lutheran Church of the Cross School to name a few. You're gonna love it here!!

The process is easy—you will automatically have a place at the school in the area you are zoned for—we approached the school as soon as they were open and filled out the paperwork. We had to a copy of their vaccination record to present, or else they’d need to have them updated. The county school board pages have good information.
As far as the education, its one of the top reasons we came here. I’d have to disagree with one of the other posters—if you are going to a decent school (with a rating of 7+ out of 10) you’ll have nothing to worry about—we moved over from Ireland. My daughter entered elementary school and I was actually worried they would hold her back—lucky for us she is bright and caught up with the other students. And she was advanced in her class in Ireland. Her school has wonderful resources, and I think she’ll have a lot more opportunities here (especially once she starts high school/secondary).

It's also worth looking at local Magnet schools, which are public and free, but you apply to attend (and can specialize in various subjects or just provide a better quality of education).

Thanks angelfalling and everyone who took time to respond. We have decided that a move over summer would just be too rushed and not giving us enough time to get our home hear ready for rental, so are now coming for kids to start school in January 2016, with a visit to see schools and houses in Oct this year during our kids school holidays. So more time to prepare! Thanks again for all the advice.....
