This bird is an absolute horrendous noise nuisance every night at the lake next to our apartment building. An internet search found it's called a Limpkin. An absolute hideous squawking noise all hours of the night. The video is not the actual bird, but an example online of what these travesties sound like: https://youtu.be/M62WR1gBRUc?t=1m13s . It just sits there hour after hour overnight repeating that same noise. Just REMARKABLY loud. You'd have to see it (and hear it) to believe it.

So I am asking the group, are there any good legal ways of getting rid of this sucker? So we can sleep again??

It's breeding season for them - he'll shut up once he gets laid. My advice is to just leave him alone and try to enjoy what's left of Florida wildlife.

Limpkins are protected by Federal and State Laws. Anybody harassing these birds will be dealt with strongly by Florida Fish and Wildlife. Penalties include hefty fines and possible prison time.

It is breeding season for limpkins and this is just something people who live in Florida have to deal with. The birds were here before any of us.

Sad that you think genocide is funny.

This bird is part of Floridas eco system and has as much right to being there as you do,i'm sure if the bird could talk it may have some things to say about the encroachment on its habitat by humans.
Learn to live with the birds occasional squawking, its all part of living in Florida.
The bird is lucky it aint living in my brothers back yard,he'd just shoot the damn thing.

I would suggest either ear plugs, or Bose EarBuds that muffle the sound around you so you can listen to something else in D Major.

Gotta love how transplants come here and expect FLORIDA to adhere to their concrete sterile needs!

So I called the Florida Wildlife Cops (FWC) today (the fish cops), and sure enough, these buggers are protected. I ended up speaking to a REALLY cute sounding young lady on the phone who said they do get calls from people asking what to do about limpkins. She said pretty much the same thing. It's probably a male and once it finds a girlfriend it'll prolly quiet down. But in the meantime just use ear plugs or something called a white noise machine. Bummer. This is gonna be a pain to deal with. Ear plugs always make my ears ring for some reason.

On a side note, FWC has an excellent website.
