Yes, more opportunity to make more and spend more on expensive housing, higher taxes etc..while you partake on a faster rat race (I don't need to elaborate).. thanks, I'll pass..
That's why I moved down here..

Yes, it is up for debate. We lived in an area known for being one of the top places to live and work. Hot job market as they say. LOTS and LOTS of competition. So much so, that it made it even more difficult to find employment in a timely manner. They had so many applications for each job and many from out of state wanting to transfer there, that almost everyone I knew looking for work could not find it.....at least not within six months and many not at all.
Be careful of what you wish for. BALANCE is the key and that is so hard for most places to manage.
BTW - The complaints you read on this forum are the same ones you can find in forums in places noted to be great places to live and/or work, such as Austin, Dallas, Charlotte, Raleigh, Boston, etc.
People complain. Human nature. That doesn't change no matter where you live.

I'm in Maryland currently and considering relocating to Tampa. My biggest motivator was financial at first, family as well. Maryland state taxes are ~5% of income. I believe property taxes are fairly similar from Tampa to here (mine are $4,500 per year for a small 3 bedroom older home vs $3-4,000 in Tampa for a newer home).
The homes there are less expensive in general, but you can spend as much down there as up here if you wanted to. We're considering moving and would save on mortgage and PMI (because we'd be able to have 20% down on a cheaper home which we don't have now), save on state taxes, probably save a little on property taxes and maybe pay more for homeowner's insurance/car insurance. In the long-run it would still be a significant savings.
But then you consider salaries and they do pay less in Tampa, but usually not so little that you would not be ahead financially. Some fields have a high need (such as medical), where salaries may pay even better there. One thing you have to count on it is mowing the grass year round (no break in the winter) if that's a bother to you. But no snow shoveling, of course. As far as AC, yes it will run most of the year, but in the wintertime you usually have a few months where you don't need it, and you can always set your thermostat to stop running when you're not at home to help conserve energy and open windows in the evening for cool breezes when possible.
In general, Tampa does tend to be more laid back than the DC area, and I think that is a big factor in quality of life if you don't want to be running around quite so much. And it does seem very competitive with everything.

Pro tip: Scarcity of good jobs coupled with ultra fierce competition does not equate to a "top place" to work. The job market for good white collar jobs in this area is pretty bad. Aforementioned fierce competition, pay on the lower end of the scale compared to many other large markets, etc. I don't know where you pulled that this is a top area to live and work, but a cursory scan of your posts in this forum show that you're a starry eyed cheerleader type who artificially inflates what you perceive as good, and you tend to glaze over the negative without really giving it much thought. You need to stop posting.

I often times wonder if people both read and actually pay attention to what is posted. You just answered my question. I did not say that THIS area is known as a top place to work.
I said that a place that we HAD lived was known as a top place to both live and work and it was incredibly difficult to find employment due to fierce competition THERE.....so people HERE should be careful what they wish for AND that balance is the key AND that is very hard for most places to manage.
Good grief people.......READ & COMPREHEND!

I am not bashing Tampa, or its labor market. My point the one that IMO its not debatable is that for a young professional that wants to move up in the ranks, that is his prerogative not quality of life, not traffic then the northeast is the place to be. Getting the job is step one, I am not arguing whether is easier to get a job here or there, after you land that job you need a ladder to climb, the ladders in Tampa have faaaar fewer rungs than say in NYC. I was recruited for the job I currently hold, I make pretty good money even by NYC standards for my position, there are 2 people above me in the whole company, every year my company has to make up a new tittle for me to justify a pay bump to corporate, realistically speaking unless someone retires which is the case with my immediate supervisor, I am pretty stuck.

I have said it before and here is one case recently where I said it (in the spontaneous move to Tampa thread):

For many people, there is a level of happiness which compensates for salary and no one can tell someone else what that differential should be for them.
This is a very personal choice for each person. As I have said in previous threads, if chasing a career and money is by far the number one priority, odds may be that this area in many cases is not going to be the ideal place to be . BUT, every situation is different and everyone has different priorities. When we decided to move down, I was extremely confident I would make less here and there was not going to be a huge savings for us here.....other than no state income tax.....which IS huge. For "us" top dollar and the career ladder were not longer high priorities.....although having a job is still important.

I don't disagree with what you are saying, but in judging a labor market or even quality of life, upward mobility has to be factor of that.

For some yes...absolutely. But it was not for me.....and I have quite some time before I retire. I just decided that chasing the career no longer carried any importance. Life is too short, sometimes shorter than people plan on, to waste chasing a career. I'd rather start enjoying now, rather than waiting. I'm sure I would not feel this way at 22 years old, but I am not 22 years old.
