I would check out the Sarasota area. IMO it's the closest thing to what your wife is seeking in this area. It's a separate Florida forum.

Dunedin, Fl has exactly what your family is looking for. The Dunedin Fine Art Center and Art Harvest - The largest autumn art show in the Tampa Bay area. A well respected juried art show with over 200 artists and thousands of visitors, and children's activities. The Dunedin Community Center, a state of the art building built only a few years ago and then there is the Kiwanis Sprayground an interactive children’s water playground "Did the Walt Disney family build this?"

There is also the main attraction, Downtown Dunedin on Main Street and Broadway. From November to May there is a Dunedin Downtown Market, it is amazing. All the restaurants are wonderful. There are so many events in Downtown all year round. Dunedin has Honeymoon Island State Park Beach with soft sand, like Clearwater Beach has.

I have only mentioned about 5% of what to do when visiting Dunedin, Fl. There is so much more.

Yup, Dunedin is certainly a great, quaint town. Nor far from Tarpon Springs either.

You have to realize that the Overall Cheesiness of this area is such that people here think red Lobster is Fine Dining.

I live in Gulfport and love its weirdness and artsy factor.

But I agree that public schools in Pinellas are rated badly generally.

There are decent programs/schools but they operate on some sort of lottery system. Have heard good things from parents whose kids got into the programs/schools of their choice.

Best of both worlds may be to choose an interesting artsy area to live (Gulfport, Dunedin, DTSP) but send kids to private schools.

Yes, THIS!! ^^ Sarasota is one of the "artsiest" cities in the state, and also has some of the best schools. Lots of artists/performers live here, including many celebrities. Check out the Sarasota forum.

Lots of theater companies here, like the Asolo, Banyan, Florida Studio Theater, Players and new one Urbanite to name a few. Also, Sarasota is home the the nationally renowned Ringling College of Art and Design, New College (a progressive liberal arts college) and the Sailor Circus.

Downtown St. Pete is where you would want to be. Sidewalk cafes, art galleries, music, etc. Except the schools arent great.

Seminole Heights, but the schools are probably pretty terrible (I don't know/care as I don't have kids).

If you can afford a private school, send your kids there, but remember, you as the parent are the primary teacher and all those teachers at the school are the secondary teachers. All the schools in Dunedin are good to great schools. Don't let the ratings of schools worry you.

If your child's school only got a "C or a B rating" last year it has nothing to do with the teachers. It all has to do with how we raise our own children.
