Does anyone know anywhere in the Tampa Bay area to get Caribbean style fried fish? What I'm looking for is a whole fish fried in oil with no breading (or an extremely light dusting at most). Similar to the picture below. My spouse is Dominican and this is a really common (and tasty!) dish in her country but we can't seem to find it anywhere, and I can't think of a reason why not. I've also had similar in trips to Panama, Jamaica, Roatan, and I think even Mexico.

Any latin American restaurant would do that. Happy fish in Armenia, most Mexican joints they call it mojarra.

That looks delish with the salted plantains.

Saw a nice Columbian restaurant in Ybor. Think it's even called that? Not sure if they have that dish though.

Columbia Restaurant

I honestly haven't found many truly Latin / Caribbean restaurants around here. Do you happen to have any recommendations on the Pinellas side of the bay? While I'm not opposed to heading there, Happy Fish is about an hour away from where I live and I rarely find myself in Tampa for anything other than the airport. Thank you for the recommendation though. At least it's something that I know to try, I just need to think of an excuse to get over that way. I'll keep my eye out at Mexican places. I can't say I've ever noticed that before, but then I'm rarely looking for fish entrees when I go to Mexican.

Yeah, we go to the Sand Key Columbia restaurant with some regularity. I don't remember every seeing a fish of that style on the menu though, and neither does she or she would have ordered it.

I should also mention that we've asked about 6-10 different seafood places that we've eaten and none would do fish fried without breading.

Not sure if this is around but I see Pescado Frito (Fried Fish in Columbian) on the menu

Larco Mar Restaurant
7006 Hanley Rd, Tampa FL 33634

Larco Mar Restaurant menu - Tampa, FL 33634 - (813) 890-0781

When I lived in Mass I would frequent Lawrence and Lynn for fish fry.

Any latin restaurant will have that...see it all the time. Try driving up Armenia, you'll find it. I know for sure that Liborio's on Causeway has it on their buffet line.

Yup. First thought that popped into my head was "West Tampa." There are a lot of restaurants off Armenia, Columbus and possibly MLK that should sell that.

I know where they serve this: El Tipico Criollo, 4721 Normandy Dr.Tampa. It's a dominican place , hole in the wall type of place, but the food is delicious.

El Tipico Criollo is a great place to eat. They also have the black pudding and other items that are hard to find.
