Just curious if that was a possibility, since I know some of the track runs down some of the main throughfares in the city. Do the businesses along Beach Dr., 2nd, etc. remain open? Because I can't think of a more awesome way to spend an afternoon than relaxing outside with a drink, with awesome cars zooming past at 200 mph every couple of minutes. Anyone tried to go down there in years past for it? Is it a complete madhouse?

I've run the 5k race the Friday before the Indy race and recall a bar where people were heckling the runners.....I'm not sure if during the Indy race that same bar is open - for the safety of all involved.

I've attended some of the practice days and it's a lot of fun since I have little knowledge about the sport. The venue is practically sealed shut and wind screens and fencing along with barriers insure you buy a ticket to see the event. I guess if you own one of those high rise condos you can watch for free, other than that, can't watch much without a ticket.

Hmm... Looks like I have to make a friend in DT St. Pete then, or get a hotel with a deck, or go to one of the practice days. Fair enough. Thanks!

I believe the Hilton downtown is the place where the folks were getting sauced and heckling runners as they ran by......right next to Al Lang Stadium......

Probably be cheaper just to buy a ticket to the event rather than renting a hotel room with a view of the race..

PS.
The race is in St Petersburg not Tampa.
