I just think that area has a lot more upside than the 'burbs.

I couldn't agree more! Tampa Heights/Riverside Heights is on the rise. You have $500k+ homes along the river. My godsister bought a home in Tampa Heights off Franc es St. In 2002 prior to the revitalization we are seeing today from the Gonzmarts and various developers in the city. This area is on the rise, I attended school at Villa Madonna on Columbus (felt safe there) and even walked/ran through the neighborhood as a child. I grew up in Wellswood/Seminole Heights and attended Tampa Catholic felt safe there and never witnessed shootings or burglaries. Crime occurs everywhere. My father has a condo that was burglarized in Northdale back in 2002. He ended up chasing the criminals with a bat. My godsister loves her neighborhood and feels safe living in the heights.

To be frank I have noticed the attitudes on this forum. Not sure if it's an "older generation" or what but it certainly does not represent the diverse urban fabric that I grew up with. Some people enjoy living like a Stepford where everyone looks like them while others enjoy diversity, and culture. Our city, county, region is great and has much potential but the attitudes certainly hold it back. No sense of civic pride, or making a difference to uplift the less fortunate. No wonder why our country is so messed up.

So I've now been down to Tampa five times, and I keep reading about 'trendy' South Tampa with all the 'nightlife' and so-called 'beautiful people'. Maybe I'm completely missing something because that area seems very unimpressive. Is this just urban legend or perhaps something that existed 10+ yrs. ago and still lives on reputation alone?!

I appreciate your response. I've noticed the folks here tend to be more suburban oriented, but that's just not for us. We live in downtown Chicago now and while we know we can't get that in Tampa, the suburbs would just be too much of an adjustment!

JMO, but I think Riverside Heights is one of the most ideal inner city neighborhoods to live. I guess the people in the past who have issues with it, is that it is a fairly small neighborhoods, and not too far from some not so nice areas. But I honestly feel as a Tampa native that within the next decade there will be huge transformations on many of these great location neighborhoods due to all the development going on. I know some have been "up and coming" for years, but I think now is finally the time.
