As I also wrote in the general Florida forum, for anyone who is interested, please consider doing some research pro and con on DDT and draw your own conclusions. It got a bad rap from The Silent Spring by Rachel Carson back in the day, and that may have been a huge propaganda job. Also the EPA under Nixon was all for it before they were against it.

I think there's a documentary about it you can rent on line for 99 cents.

Yawn. Wake me up when the sensationalism has blown over.

Let's see...
- Bird Flu
- Swine Flu
- Ebola
- Y2K (...)

and now Zika. It's the pandemic du jour. Gimme a break.

If I weren't pregnant, I wouldn't be concerned at all. But, it's a very legitimate concern for the population of people who are impacted by it. I wasn't concerned at all about Ebola, but I bet we would have both been shaking in our boots if someone dropped us in the middle of a Liberian slum during the Ebola outbreak.

AIDS hardly gets a mention these days.

I agree Roscoe. You know, the media can be a trip sometimes. They love to blow things out of proportions, and spread paranoia and fear. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for being vigilant and knowledgeable of what's going on. But there are so far just a handful of Zika cases in the US, and aside from limiting travel to the affected countries, spraying yourself with mosquito repellant and maybe wearing long-sleeve and pants (if possible), there is nothing else we can do. AIDS, CANCER, HEART DISEASE and the likes are REAL KILLERS, and have claimed thousands of lives..they are now getting little attention, how come?? ONLY PERTINENT news on Zika should be reported, but they need to stop making everyone paranoid!

Right now they don't know where Zika infection occured. It could have happened else where and the person traveling to St. Pete.

They said it was non-travel related, at least according to Dr. Jo on Fox 13.

Zika in and of itself seems to be just a virus, no more harmful than a mild flu virus, unless the person affected is weak, has a compromised immune system or is elderly. In which case they can be badly affected just like in a case of the flu.

The main concern is the effect it can have on a newborn, producing microcephaly. However, from some of the reading I've done, it seems that there's a possibility that this condition may be caused by the naled pesticide that sprayed specifically for Zika. I think Puerto Rico stopped the use of it. Brazil didn't. They're spraying heavily with naled in some parts of Miami.

found in sperm of males who've been bitten, not sure how long it remains there - but if you're a male looking to reproduce and have it, could mess up things for a lifetime on multiple levels....as well as the nation who will have a health epidemic on its hands.....as well as the lifetime commitment to care for an infant with microencephaly through adulthood and beyond.
