Frontier's Verizon Takeover: What Tampa Bay Needs To Know

A little FAQ for those who have FiOS service. Verizon is probably the best provider in the area, so it's good to hear that little will be changing.

Was considering switching. This gives me pause, as I know there was a lot of discussion fairly recently about Frontier limiting speeds for torrents.

That's interesting. Didn't know about that. Here in Raleigh, we are getting Google Fiber very soon. I know Google is exploring Tampa as a possibility.

Careful for Verizon clients as I already heard of many who have issues with their email if they have a Verizon email address.

I had Frontier in New York. It was not built on the Fios Backbone, but I had their triple play and I was NOT happy with my service. Even their own website was sluggish. I am not thrilled with this transition. I noticed their websites were SLOOOWWW this morning. Hopefully the speed will improve once the transition is complete.

Just an FYI, a LOT of people have been down since 8am this morning. Frontier has f'd this transition up royally, and that's coming a few days after their region Pres gave these idiotic statements about how smooth it would go:

Frontier Communications pledges smooth transfer of bay area Verizon FiOS and land line services | Tampa Bay Times

I have a friend whose business had to shut down because they're still offline. They're a seven day a week shop so he's just hoping it comes back up by tomorrow morning.

They are having quite a few hiccups so far. Unfortunately, being in the industry and having several contacts that have worked for frontier - this isn't a surprise and I wouldn't expect it to get much better.

Also, they plan on converting Fios to "Vantage" which will bring some changes, most notable will be the 2.5mbps HD streams. What does 2.5mbps HD streams mean? Terrible HD picture quality... thats about it.. Its designed to work on DSL and thats what we will get with our fiber to the home networks. Essentially, were being watered down to a one size fits all service.

I have Verizon TV and Phone and pay about 110 dollars a month. I don't get all the channels available. Also I have to pay for a router each month. My cousin has Bright House and he pays 99.00 a month for all channels available and very high speed internet, I believe its called lightning. I am on a contract until the end of November, I cant wait to cancel the crap I have been paying for.

Does anyone know if Frontier is still going to be a 2 year contract type business?
