They report due to large amounts of teacher retirement, it is expected that Sarasota will hire approximately 200 new teachers, Hillsborough will hire approximately 800 new teachers and Pasco will hire approximately 180 new teachers.

This is an annual thing, and nothing new. Hillsborough typically hires many hundreds of new teachers every year.

When you have an employee base of over 30,000, annual attrition of that sort isn't surprising, especially in the teaching profession.

With all the political games and crap they have to put up with, there should be an indefinite shortage because no one should even want to be a teacher in the first place. Anyone in college who wants to be a teacher should change their major immediately.

They shouldn't be hiring from colleges. They should be hiring from the Marines.

I have seen career military officers who went through the alternative certification program leave a classroom in tears. Teaching has no parallel with the military, nor do techniques used in the military.

2 things I would not want to do for a career today, here or anywhere, with how people are today.

1) Teacher

2) Police Officer

They actually require a little of each other's skills today. They are both used and abused, but rarely ever appreciated or thanked.....never mind given the benefit of the doubt.

Hopefully, the reaction to the shortage will be an increase in teacher salaries.

What, and recognize the discipline as a true profession, rather than the jaded idea that it's full of people who can't cut it elsewhere or that it's easy?

Sorry for the snark, but I left the profession for that reason, along with others. Working 60 hour weeks for $40k a year wasn't my idea of a good living. Thankfully, I had another profession I could move to that pays far, far better.

Both of those professions are also fallback which often but not in all cases people who are looking for a steady paycheck will go into with no vocation.
