My 10-year-old son is suddenly interested in salt water fishing. We bought him a rod,and have taken him to the pier at Clearwater and off the causeway to Frank Howard park. Anyone have any good fishing spots where a young man has a chance at fishing from the bank and catching something larger than the palm of your hand? Mom would appreciate it if it was a place you didnt slide down slick rocks into mucky water, but that's just being picky. What's your favorite spot between Hudson and Clearwater?

What's your favorite bait?

TIA!

In and around Hudson Beach aint bad
Anclote fishing pier although getting snagged on the rocks can be a problem.
Personally i think to the south of Clearwater has more fishing opportunities=

Skyway pier would be best at nite. Just don't plop down dead bait on the bottom like squid. best to catch live pinfish right at the pier and free line them at nite or cast net some white bait and fish for mangrove snapper under the pier or around it. During the heat of day and dead bait will only get you catfish.
I fished for a living well offshore like 40 to 100 miles out. Used to fish the bay as a kid when i had a small boat and would catch 30 to 60lb blackdrum under the bridges with half a bluecrab for kicks and let them go. Once i fished offshore i never fished the bay again around 1979.

We caught a ton of pinfish off Clearwater pier. We don't have a boat, so shore fishing it must be!

Thanks again for the insight!

Check out the pier at skyway. Also around most bridges with good water flow and using live bait should get you some action, During the hot months nite fishing is best, Big snook, tarpon for starters.

If you don't know how to throw a cast net yet you can catch all the bait you want w/ a sabiki rig.

If your new to the area it wouldn't be a bad idea to go out one time w/ this guide. He's a legend around here. He only fishes from bridges, seawalls, etc. He doesn't need a boat. I think it would be worth it, you'd learn a lot and have a lot of fun to go just once w/ him.

As most/all those piers are waterfront in nature it speaks to high end neighborhoods that wont give you a problem at night, however night fishing isnt my thing so i'm not familiar with each piers rules and regulations on hours of operation.
