Hello! I am moving to St. Petersburg, FL in a few months. I'm a single 29yr old female and will have another female roommate, same age. We want to be close to downtown, as we will both be working in that area. I'm wondering if there are any neighborhoods/streets to avoid?
I've noticed a lot of places for cheap south of Central Ave but if I remember correctly, anything south of that area starts to get a bit sketchy and have been told to stay more north. However, I don't want to be too far north.

So I guess my questions are:
Is South of Central Ave is safe?
Are there other neighborhoods/areas that we should avoid?

To put it bluntly south of Central Ave between 4th st and 49th st is the bad side of town. You may or may not feel comfortable or safe living in that side of town but the rents are cheap.
Better options would be the Crescent lake/Old Northeast area or a bit further west of downtown the Gulfport/Pasadena area.

Thank you for that information. I have been looking at some areas west of downtown or a bit north of it, as we are trying to keep it a bit on the cheaper side, without being too far from the action or in a bad neighborhood.

Also - I see a lot of apartments for rent on the north east side. I'll probably move into an apartment to start off - was wondering if that area is still close enough to downtown, are there things to do up there or is it mainly just apartment buildings? I just dont want to be too far from everything!

4th st and 9th st are the main north south thoroughfares and have public transit to downtown.

I just moved to Crescent Lake and feel completely safe in this area. There are plenty of older apartment complexes here and in the Old Northeast that are really reasonable. They aren't as updated as the newer buildings downtown, but they are incredibly safe and these are great areas. Walking distance to tons of bars, restaurants, and downtown.

My son lives in Historic Kenwood...was just there for a week dog sitting... it is a safe area...I parked my car in an alley for a week and had zero issues...my son and DIL both drive high end vehicles...and no issues in a year...I live in Palm Harbor we have had a rash car break ins...crime happens everywhere...

Can you give me some names or an idea of where these apartments are? Every apartment I have seen close to downtown is very expensive and then the ones I can afford seem to be so far north - looks to only be about a 15 minute drive but I'd like to be closer to downtown or at least the beaches or an area with things to do, not just be surrounded by apartments and office buildings.

I don't know the names of them, but there are a bunch on MLK/9th St. South of 22nd and a bunch more on 5th St. Between 22nd and 12th, and a lot of apartments and rentals in the Old Northeast neighborhood, primarily 13th Ave and south but almost every street has at least one apartment building. Most are much older buildings that you probably just have to drive by to get the number. If you're able to get down here before you move, I would recommend driving around in Crescent Lake, Old Northeast, and Uptown. These places won't have websites but might be listed on Craigslist or something.
