Hi folks -- I have finally taken the plunge and purchased my own kayak. I'm taking it up to Weeki Wachee this weekend, and am looking for suggestions on paddling here in Tampa.

Are people allowed to kayak on the Hillsborough River downtown? I think that could be a pretty cool place to '***.

ETA: apparently we're not allowed to say ' y-a-k'

Old Tampa bay is a cool place to kayak. Access from Oldsmar or Safety Harbor.

E.G. Simmons Park, S. Hillsborough County, has a course - and a lot of mangroves. Easy to navigate and not get lost. Communicates to the bay. Very safe. I've seen manatees and dolphins a lot of the times I've been kayaking there. Haven't run into any gators.

Seems cooler on the water. Good work out, upper body, imo. You do come out drenched especially if you wear pfd, as I always do.

We recently bought a couple kayaks as well. We put them in at Lettuce Lake Park and spent the afternoon going up the river. It was hot, but fun. Lots of birds, turtles and a couple gators.

IN Tampa? I've seen people kayaking in front of UT and down the Hillsborough River.

If you want to cross the bay, check out Weedon Island, off Gandy. Lots of good trials back in the mangroves there

During other than Summer time it's way more pleasant, but the same fun and birds, and turtles, and many gators especially at Lettuce Lake Park

Thanks for the responses, y'all! Did Weeki Wachee today and had a blast. I think Weeden Island and DT Hillsborough River will be my next two...depending on how I do I may feel comfortable enough to take this bad boy out across Hurricane Pass (b/w Honeymoon and Caladesi Islands)!
