I'm wondering what the coastal areas north of Tampa up to Crystal River are like. From what I've heard it's some of the nicest land in the state. I'm looking for something semi-rural with lots of nature but within an hour of "civilization" like Tampa.

If you want semi-rural, you'll have to go north of Crystal River. It is nice but it's getting crowded in Crystal River. I live in Inverness which is just 20 minutes from Crystal River and like it here more. We have the 7 lake chain right in the middle of town and recently new boardwalks were built all around to stroll on. there are nice parks just a walk away from the historic downtown area. We have lots of craft fairs, festivals and car shows each year when they close down the downtown area for them. Lots of boats, fishing and water sports on the lakes in town. There's also the long walking/biking trail that goes right through town and i believe is 32 miles long and any given day you'll find many people walking/biking it. Recently the sherriff office has voluteers who patrol the walkway on a golf cart for safety, help if you get a flat tire, etc. To me, there's more to do in this town than Crystal River.

Where I am we are on 1.8 acre lots. We are 2 streets over from 1000's of acres of preserve land, 10 minutes from the gulf, 45 minutes from the airport and 3 minutes from a canoe launch on the Weeki Wachee River.

Hernando County still has some cattle ranches and farms and many nurseries so I would say we are semi rural but you still have normal shopping close by. You would need to travel about 1/2 hour for malls but you still have Sears, Baells, Ross, Old Navy and more up here.

Overall a laidback atmosphere and lots of nature.
