Hubbie & I are over 55 and plan to look for/buy a home to retire to in the next few months. We prefer the Tampa Bay area but also are looking as far north as citrus county and as far south as Sarasota.

Here's the deal - every active adult community I've seen on line is promoted as a golf or country club community. In over a half a century, I have never golfed, never had a desire to golf and the thought of watching golf comes in a close second to watching paint dry.

Question - can someone live happily ever after in such a community, make friends and have a life without setting foot on a golf course or tennis court?
Are there any alternatives for the aging baby boomer set to the upscale gated "country club community?" Since we do not know anyone in Florida, we feel that unless we are in a planned community, our lives could be very lonely down here. Thanks.

Absolutely. Golf is just one thing to do in FLA retirement communities. Recommend visiting Sun City Center, FL in Ruskin. That community has a nearly 100 social committees unrelated to golf.

I meant social groups - with a variety of interests - although SSC does have ample golf, you don't have to play to live comfortably with a big social network. In my opinion, golf course architecture adds to the peaceful, relaxed feel to a community. You don't have to golf to enjoy the serenity that type of community brings.

The only thing about buying into a golf community and not playing will be the costs--it's usually more expensive! And, many times, there are "club/membership fees" that can transfer with the home..meaning if you don't purchase it, when you try to sell, there's no "membership" with the house! Just something to think about!

Being in a golf community may add to the value of your home, also.
