Hello, I haven't lived in Florida in about 8 years and have a few questions.

We may be moving down from Tennessee, I still hold my license from before I moved ( I renewed online about 3 years ago and it's still valid ) But my question is this, We're moving in May and my tags on my car from TN expire at the end of May, If I re-new in Tennessee before I move and keep my current insurance in Tennessee valid for the year until May of 09, Will I get in trouble ?

I know the website says you have 30 days or whatever to change your tags, license, ect ect but is it REALLY true ? Anyone else that moved from out of state, did you renew after 30 days or let your stuff go until it expired ?

Or, since Florida makes your tags go by your birthday, would it be wise to just wait until your birthday to switch ?

Well, I don't know if its right or not, but we moved to NC and still had 6 months left on our FL places (exp in march) - We rode around NC for several months (just got new tags a few weeks ago) and no one stopped us. The reason we waited so long because it was so darn expensive - cost over $400 for new tags! And we still need to get emissions inspection. Not sure if its "legal" but we haven't gotten pulled over in almost 10 years for anything so maybe if we would've gotten a ticket then we would have been in trouble!

Default let's put it this way

with all the tourists here you won't get pulled over with current TN plates but if you have an accident and rear enders no fault of the person hit, are very common. I had one in Apr. and my husband got it in May, same car poor little Beetle Anyway, if something like that happens, you could have a problem. Then again you're a young guy and if you drive something red and cool, you might get pulled over. Why don't you just wait to get here and do it right away? It's no big deal, no inspection or anything. Just don't drive on expired tags.

Well, When I lived in Florida last time I never owned a car so I know I'll be hit with the Impact Fee for never having registered a car in Florida and it alone is near $100 and I also noticed that no matter what the date is, they'll only renew the tag to coincide with your birthday and still charge you full price. I'd hate to pay full price to only use the tag 6 months before renewing. I know this issue sounds pretty petty over a couple hundred bucks but hey, like you said, I'm young a few hundred counts

Also, I don't drive anything red or cool, I have a black 04 Ford Ranger

Is there a Florida Farm Bureau for insurance ? I have Farm Bureau insurance in Tennessee and it actually saved me $200 a month when I switched from State Farm to Farm Bureau, but then I was younger than 25 at the time too..

Thanks for the help !

I don't know about legal but I waited to change my tags from TN to FL until my birthday partly because my DL needed renewing also. I also didn't offer that my TN licence and address were no longer correct. Here you have to change your address within 10 days of moving. We didn't follow that and ended up with a ticket because husband said the address was wrong. I won't suggest you wait that is up to you however i will say to spend 5 dollars and get a weigh certificate from somewhere that will give you an accurate weight of your car. I see that more often than not people here paying 10-30 dollars more a year because the DMV has the incorrect weight for a car/truck. I have purchase 7 cars since being here and none of them had the correct weight. You much bring the certificate with before you get the tag. They will not refund any money.

Thing is...

I won't comment on the legality .. but I somehow skirted the system and have a valid DL in FL and TN so they're both good. What happend was that when I moved to TN, the day I turned in my Florida DL I went online and ordered a duplicate from FL.

My mother once moved from TN to FL, she drove on her TN tags for like 8 months before she had to renew, went to renew in Lee County and they refused to register her car, some kind of problem with her lein holder. She later went to Hendry County and had no problems.

What made you leave Memphis ? ( if I even had to ask... )

Family actually. It wasn't the crime. Husband wanted to move to Nashville so we spent a year there and then I wanted to move to Tampa because my family had all moved here. I miss parts but I won't ever move back. (to memphis)

FutureTexan- if you think the $100 fee in Florida is high than don't even bother with Texas. When my husband and I moved there it was $400 for him to register his car (2000 model) and his Harley! I couldn't believe how bloody high it was. I cheated and kept my tags from where we moved because after 2 weeks of being in TX I knew there was no way we were going to stay....

Having lived in Tampa for so many years and knowing how hard it is to live, work, pay bills, ect, ect I was VERY reluctant to move back, esp. since I wanted to eventually one day buy a house. We're moving in a pact of 3 families ( all relatives ) My wife and I were in favor of Texas but were out voted so it looks like come May-June, I'll once again carry the label " Floridian " So I need to make the most of it.
