The only time I heard the term yuppie is in very old movies before I was around.

Oh and I think he wants to live in a suburban area not urban which most of you guys suggested.

Default "Yuppies" an outdated expression?

Let me rephrase, where do young, urban professionals live in Tampa? I was unaware that young, urban professionals all died out fifteen years ago.

Are some parts of Hyde Park significantly nicer than others? What is the population of Hyde Park, mostly families, young people, "DINKS"? I noticed all the quaint cobblestone streets on Google streetview. Does the place have a Mediterranean feel or is that just my imagination? How do Davis Island and Harbour Island compare?

Thank you.

To me all of Hyde Park is considerably nice, but the Historic District(South of Swann Avenue, West and North of Bayshore Blvd, East of Snow/Rome Avenues) are particularly nicest(roads like Boulevard, Edison, Inman, etc.). Not sure of the population, it's part of zip codes 33606. Mix of families, old Tampa natives, old money, young couples and professionals. As far as a Medaterranean feel, im not sure about that, reminds me of an older type neighborhood from Chicago(the developer who developed Hyde Park in the early 1900's was from Chicago, hence the name Hyde Park). Its nice to have the Hyde Park Village act as the town center.

Davis Islands to me has more of a Mediterranean type feel to it, great little Main Street, town center area, beautiful homes, a great dog beach and park.

Harbour Island is mostly all built from the 80's to present, all brand new, lots of professionals.

I used to own a condo at Madison SoHo. It's a nice, GATED complex with good amenities and an excellent location. You can find a 1BR there for about $1000/month now. You're not going to get things like granite countertops or stainless steel appliances, but you're also not going to get those things at apartment complexes either. Another problem you might face is parking. One bedroom units are assigned one parking space in the garage. If you have two cars, you're going to either need to park it on the street or rent another spot from someone (they are available).

Other than that, I'd say that Post Hyde Park is probably the next best complex in the SoHo/Hyde Park area. Most of the other complexes in the area are old, however you might be able to find a renovated condo or townhouse for rent through an independent owner within your price range. Any of the complexes in Harbor Island are nice, but anyplace on Davis Island can be hit or miss. You just have to keep in mind that everything on Davis Island is old.

You want to park your car in a gated lot or garage. You won't get that anywhere on Davis Island. The main crime problems that we see in the South Tampa area involve vehicle burglaries and thefts. Keeping your car(s) in a gated lot will decrease your chances of victimization exponentially.

Avoid ALL of the apartment complexes on West Shore.

When you say avoid ALL of the aprtment complexes on West Shore, are you speaking of the Camden communities(Westshore and Gandy, and south of Westshore along the Bay)?? I have some friends that live in those communities, and they have never complained....They look very nice from the outside, well manicured landscaping, nice buildings, mostly military and single professionals...what do you know about these?

We're at every one of them almost daily for one thing or another, although they aren't anywhere near as bad as the two on Lois just north of Interbay. You know you can go to the police department with an address, fill out a public records request, and get the dispatch history for that address. The SoHo/Hyde park area is just overall nicer than the area around Gandy, and there are less problems at the apartment complexes.
