BREAKING: Sustained winds have hit 40 mph, so FHP has closed the Skyway just minutes ago.

SEPTEMBER 09, 2017 7:07 PM

MANATEE
The Sunshine Skyway Bridge over the Tampa Bay has been shut down as winds have reached more than 40 mph, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Just before 7 p.m. Friday, FHP announced it was securing the Skyway . Troopers will also secure the Gandy and Howard Frankland bridges when sustained wind speeds reach 40 mph, according to a news release.

For those on Interstate 4 trying to evacuate, at 3:30 p.m. Gov. Rick Scott authorized the use of the shoulder eastbound from 50th Street in Tampa to State Road 429 in the left lane only at 40 mph.

The use of the shoulder on Interstate 75 has been canceled.

Irma just seems to want to hug the coast of Cuba. Emerges a little bit, then dives back down.

too far west could mean a lot more flooding/surge...but a direct hit on land could mean we lose all our of roofs and maybe our lives.....

Residents should brace for sustained winds in the 80 mph range and gusts up to 115 mph, forecasters said. Irma's top winds measured 125 mph on Saturday, making it a strong Category 3 storm.

Even more devastating would be a shift further west, holding Irma just offshore and putting Tampa Bay on the east side of the storm. In that case, the region would stand directly in the path of the strongest winds, and the potential storm surge would rise

"There's no ideal here, unfortunately," said meteorologist Bryan Mroczka of the National Weather Service in Ruskin. "But we don't want this storm moving any further west."

Storm surge, or the water pushed ashore by a hurricane, often poses the greatest threat to life and property. It was responsible for many of the 1,500 deaths associated with Hurricane Katrina in 2005, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
