we need better cities. More walkability.

Walking doesn't work for some of us. I drive to the supermarket, transfer my groceries from the cart to the trunk of the car and drive home. My assigned parking space is 20' from my front door.

Yesterday I saw a truck from Safeway that delivers groceries to your door. The store is 8 miles away, but you can shop online.

I live in a suburb of Richmond Va, a very nice place to live. One of my few regrets is that we don't have sidewalks and crossing major streets on foot is like playing Russian Roulette. We enjoy traveling, especially by car and have journeyed everywhere within driving distance an untold number of times. There is much to be said for tasting new things and with time rapidly dwindling, there really isn't that much to lose. I also know that if you don't use it, you lose it. For me and my wife, sidewalks, pools, oceans, plays, parks and gyms are very very important. Once again so many thanks for all the great comments and answers to my post.

You're going to have to search for a place that satisfies all of your needs. You might look closely at downtown Sarasota - where they have arts, plays, parks, health care, sidewalks.....downtown ST Petersburg likewise has all of that. But housing costs a premium for those area. I've found that living 20-35 miles away from those areas allows me to live in a less expensive house, but a car ride to those areas allows me to enjoy what both STP, Sarasota, Tampa downtown areas have to offer. My community is very safe as well - much safer than those areas are at night.
