I love sports. I don't get the appeal of hockey... If anyone wants to explain, I'm all ears, Lol.

Living in the northeast and the midwest there are hockey fans galore (especially the midwest... Also a higher concentration in my experience of people that like ice skating). Moving to Tampa I didn't expect such a love for the sport... Actually didn't even know there was a team here. Having also lived in SE FL I actually expected more of a love for it there, but to be honest that's mostly, I assumed, because of such a large population down there of people that likely never grew up around hockey- so part curiosity and novelty.

Do you think it's because more midwesterners (and perhaps Canadians) appear to resettle here either as full-timers or snowbirds than the east coast?

Yes, a great number of transplants in the area support the team. Snowbirders from Canada and the larger NE, Midwestern cities (Detroit, Chicago) as well. It has been pretty popular here - lately because the owner of the NHL team has put a lot of money into the team and the arena and surrounding areas. He also spends a lot to support local charities. Location of the arena has been important as well (close to the center of the area population, unlike The Trop, where the Rays baseball team plays).

I bet a lot of non-transplants have never laced up a pair of skates (I never have) but like the speed, physicality of the sport. So I'm surprised like you that it maintains it's popularity over the years.

I feel like the season (same as MLB and NBA) is way too long so my interest in NHL doesn't kick in until March/April when the playoff drive begins. Normally I go to 5-10 games a season, but lack the interest this season for some reason.

The Tampa Bay Lighting have been one of the top 5 teams in attendance over the last 10 years. The current owner has done much to increase the game day experience for the average fan. As the down town area around the arena goes through a make over it will only enhance the excitement for game day fun. Go Bolts!

A lot of it has to do with the location of the arena as well as the recent success that the team has had under new ownership. You could say it's the most successful sports franchise in Tampa. I grew up going to Lightning games.

A cold weather city is not required for hockey to be successful somewhere. Look at LA, sold out every game since December 2011. Nashville is another good example.

Correct look at the Dallas Stars the use to be the Minnesota North Stars. One place it did not take off was In Atlanta were they were called the Atlanta Flames till 1980 then they moved to Calgary now the Calgary Flames.

Lightning attendance had a nice climb up until they won the Stanley Cup in 04. It had a dip afterwards and then climbed back up to 100% these last few seasons. Winning consistently does wonders to attendance. (see bucs and rays). Nashville had a nice 8 year climb, very nice
