A little above 3 hours to the state line and the mountain views start around Greenville, SC before the cross over the state line. Beautiful country area. Asheville is awesome town in the mountains near the border. You get both worlds and cheaper than Florida.

It’s great you’re thinking about your long term future. Your retirement may seem like it’s very distant now, but it creeps up on you. The vast majority of the population is poorly prepared for their retirement.

For us, we would have taken huge pay cuts relocating to Florida during our working years, which would make it much more difficult to save as much for retirement.

What kind of work do you do now where you have jobs lined up in different parts of the country? Do those jobs pay equally, or is the pay based on the cost of living in each area? There’s always risk in changing jobs too. We’ve seen several people who left my employer to go elsewhere, only to return in a couple of weeks, because the working conditions were so poor at competing employers.

I work in the airline industry and am apart of union so my pay remains the same however I believe I get paid slightly more in NYC , Boston and California to offset cost of living . It's still entry level I'm not breaking the bank in what I do but the hours are mine for the taking and my job is secure . Roughly 35k right now

Your plans make more sense knowing that information. It’s a significant problem moving to a different area without having a job lined up. You need to relocate a reasonable commuting distance from a major airport.

You might also consider around the Ft Meyers area around RSW. The cost of living is lower there than the Tampa area, but there are more senior citizens in that area, than the Tampa area, which might be a problem, since you are young. You could search from Ft Meyers to Punta Gorda, north of RSW. The cost of living in Naples to the south of RSW, is quite a bit higher.
