Hmmmm, there is not much en route to Sarasota. There is a fun spot, great beach style Tiki bar/restaurant on the water called The Getaway right by the airport. Everything else is somewhat out of the way on the beach. It will take you 40 minutes to get to Sarasota and you will have much better choices but if you need to eat right away....I would say:
The Getaway
IC Sharks (Next door to getaway)
Billys as mentioned but again, somewhat out of the way
Riverhouse Reef is a good spot but so close to Sarasota, you may just keep going on
O'Maddys in Gulfport is a fun bar on the bay with good food

Decent food, great view on the beach and always lively crowd and live music. There are 4-5 other spots next to each other you can bounce around to as well.
