The old bridge was built in 1960 and needs to replaced soon. Salt water and air do bad things to the iron rods over time.

You are thinking of the north side span stan. It was finished around 1990. The old bridge is on the south side and was built in 1960. They started drilling test piles in 1985 for the new span man. The Gandy randy has had many spans . When i was a kid they had the old bridge that was built in the late 30's. Then the newer span was built in 1956 and then another much later on.

The Causeway big bridge used to be a draw bridge with wood pilings and we caught jew fish under that bridge when i was 10. That was torn down and rebuilt around 1975. Back then 80lb cobia was nothing to catch.

Now you have to understand the reasoning for that. You see, they widened 275 in Pinellas and made it easy to evacuate in case of a hurricane, then they bottle neck it coming into Tampa to strand all of the evacuees on the Howard Frankland bridge... Brilliant!!! or idiotic, depending...

I have yet to understand why (money and politics of course) they wouldn't extend 275 north from Gateway, elevated over US 19 or McMullen Booth, to connect to 75 north of Tampa, instead of sending everyone through the middle of the larger city, making a circle around Tampa like all of the other major cities have.

To help answer the question, people from the most densely populated county in FL, Pinellas, all must go through Tampa to go north unless you want to take 19 with heavy traffic and traffic signals.
So, yes, besides all of the people heading into Tampa, you have all of the tourists that are heading north or east.

Yes, it was built in 1960, by Cone Brothers Contractors, who used salt water instead of fresh water to mix the concrete. It saved them a lot of money instead of having to truck in fresh water...

That is actually why the original bridge has deteriorated so fast... They got into big trouble over that, then the whole thing sort of just disappeared... Its all about the money, honey!

The entire history of Tampa has been plagued by corruption. If you do any research on all of the 'famous' names, you will understand and then wonder why we honor them as most should have been prosecuted...
